Thyroid gland is an important and one of the biggest glands in the endocrine system of our body. This gland secretes some hormones which are essential for the metabolic functions of our body and if they are not produced in the adequate amount then some disorders may arise. These disorders should b treated and this is known as the thyroid treatment.

The various disorders which occur due to the improper functioning of the thyroid hormone and require thyroid treatment are:

• Hyperthyroidism
• hypothyroidism
• thyroid cancer
• thyroid nodules/goiter

The thyroid treatment for these disorders can be explained in detail as follows:

hyperthyroidism: This is caused due to excessive levels of hormone in the body and can be treated as follows:

• By giving an anti thyroid medicine or by drug treatment: They are used to make the thyroid levels normal in our body. The drugs used for this treatment are Methimazole and Propylthiouracil. Although these drugs are important but also have their own side effects.
• The surgical removal of the thyroid gland takes place along with the radioactive iodine.
• In extreme cases the surgery or the thyroid removal is done.

Hypothyroidism: This is caused when the thyroid hormone production in the body reduces and in order to treat this disorder artificially the hormones are given.


• The T4 in this case is given synthetically and thus is an important factor for thyroid treatment for this kind.
• Surgery also plays an important.

Thyroid cancer: Thyroid cancer occurs in the thyroid gland. There are four types of thyroid cancer papillary, follicular, medullary, and Ana plastic. This type of thyroid treatment involves the following steps.


• Surgery or Thyroidectomy: it involves removal of the cancer cells or other malignant.
• Radiation therapy: it is responsible for killing any cancer cells so present.
• Using hormone replacement therapy: it prevents the cancer from recurring.
• Chemotherapy: it is another important treatment which kills the cancerous and the other malignant cells.

Thyroid nodules/goiter:


• The thyroid nodules are a benign tumor which develops from the thyroid gland. These nodules can be easily treated by shrinking them or by preventing their growth. Also surgical removal is recommended in this case.
• The goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland situated in the neck and in this disorder the gland becomes enlarged. This can be diagnosed with the help of either an x-ray or the biopsy. The treatment employed for this is either surgical removal or using the medications provided.

Apart from the above stated medications and surgery the thyroid treatment can be done by alternative methods. The world over apart from the medications some other methods like the use of various herbs and exercises like yoga have become prevalent. The alternative methods are stated as under:

• By adapting to herbal means which implies to having a diet rich in iodine or other factors like the ayurvedic or the Chinese medicines which have been made using the herbs.
• By consuming the multivitamins and other mineral rich food items in our diet can also cure thyroid to an extent.
• By practicing yoga the thyroid is cured to an extent. The various asanas available are such that they help in curing thyroid.
